It was late evening. Dinner had been served and the Candidates that wished to Impress to whers would have just finished up with their evening chores. Caleeka had informed each of them personally of this all important lesson this evening. So, there she sat on a stool, Calee laying down next to her as she awaited the Candidates' arrival near the wher caverns. Her brothers were going to stop by as well and she hoped that their gold handler without a clutch would also stop by. It was mainly to show the Candidates the different temperaments expected of the Crique whers. Especially with the upcoming hatching of Mezra's clutch.
Keeva had been among the first to arrive, surprisingly by herself too. Schadoe was probably busy finishing up a task somewhere, Caleeka presumed as she gave the quiet Candidate a welcoming smile.
The small girl timidly took a seat, gazing all around her briefly before letting her eyes settle on the big green wher next to Caleeka.

Angeeal walked slowly towards the meeting area Crisis hanging onto his hair and looking about excitedly, the little brown had barely let Angeeal go all day. Soemthing had excited his human this morning and he wanted to know what, Melia had been the same way for about an hours...then she saw a shiny bug and was off to 'collect' it. Upon seeing the green Wher he hurried the rest of the way and stopped in away of the creature. "By Faranth...she is beautiful..." he whispered, and indeed she was, more beautiful then any dragon. Crisis looked at the large green creature curiously, he'd seen Whers before and never really thought much of them...they were afterall just small dragons, but for some reason his human was incredibly interested in the creature.
It took a moment for Angeeal to realize he was staring and turned mismatched eyes to Caleeka and flushed lightly. "Sorry, it's only been recently that I've seen a Wher but your Green is gorgeous..." he said softly as he walked backwards to seat himself on a stool. "May I ask what her name is?"

Caleeka smiled as Angeeal and his two firelizards approached, watching the reaction to her big green with a smile. It always amazed her how some viewed the whers with their awkward goggles in the daylight and their obviously different build compared to the much better known dragons.
Calee, too, watched the Candidate approach, more so watching the firelizards than the person, but all the same. Beautiful. She'd heard it and so she lifted her head a bit more in happiness of the comment. ~Calee thanks him,~ she said to her Chosen.
The handler smiled as Angeeal took a seat. "This is Calee and she thanks you. You'll be seeing a few more whers this evening, because I've arranged for them to stop by our meeting place before the lesson is through," the Assistant CandidateMaster informed with a friendly smile.

Angeeal looked to Caleeka and smiled softly. "She is most welcome, I promise I do not say such things lightly," he said as Melia finally returned, the tiny glowing bug in her mouth. The green perched herself in Angeeal's lap and began to fiddle with the frantically shining insect. Angeeal simply ignored her antics as Crisis turned his eyes to the shiny trinket. "I have met one other Wher, one that was Impressed by a friend of my father, he's the one who suggested I attempt to Impress since our family has such an affnity with creature of Pern...well, all except dragons, not one of us has ever been Searched or even Stood on the Sand and quite honestly," he said before turning his eyes back to Calee and sighed longingly, "my desire for a dragon died the instant I laid eyes on your Calee..."
It wasn't for a moment that he realized Caleeka had mentioned a lesson and turned to her again. "What exactly will we be doing in the lesson?"

Randy hurried toward the meeting spot. She had gotten caught up in her chores and reading and lost track of time. She slid into the cavern with a flush. "Sorry," she apologized as she took a seat. She smiled at Calee. She seemed much bigger then Veela had been. "She's bigger then Veela," Randy said, studying the green. "But she is still lovely."

Angeeal was such a nice lad, Caleeka mused to herself, getting a few happy words from her wher about the Candidate's words. "Then you aught to do well for this clutch," she assured him as Calee's eyes caught another Candidate approaching.
Before answering Angeeal's inquiry about the lesson, Caleeka replied to Randy's words, "We haven't begun yet. We're still missing a few that may have gotten caught up with their duties."
Calee crooned at yet another comment about her, gazing at Randy a moment before letting her gaze wander back to those little dragons.
"Yes, Calee is one of the larger greens around. Veela's obviously quite the small one. But we'll see perhaps one of the smallest whers around and one of the biggest tonight if we're lucky. Every color but a bronze I'm afraid." Then the Assistant Candidate Master turned her attention back to the others present, her gaze lingering on Angeeal in answer to his question. "With the upcoming hatching getting closer and closer, I wanted to introduce all of you to the different temperaments in whers. Most whers are extremely protective of their Bonded and some won't even allow another person to touch their handler, but the Crique whers are a bit less protective. Still, I'd like you all to be prepared for anything. You'll see the extreme cases of these traits in my brother's little green Veela and my other brother's brown Sanrek."

Xesn took another sip of her cup of klah. She looked over at her gold wher, Xesna. They had just finished eating their meals. She had to stifle a yawn behind her hand. Though she wasn't tired. Just one of those random moments when you see another person yawning and you can't resist the urge to do so either.
Xesna's and Xesna see the young ones?
Xesn grinned down at the gold wher and nodded. "Yes, we are." She replied and they walked up to the cavern and then walked in. Xesn waved at Caleeka. "I hope we're not late."

The young man flushed at her comment. "I hope so, I truly do I wish for a female and I...I know it is a lot to wish for but I truly desire a Gold, I would not be against a Green though afterall if she would be anything like your Calee then I would be very priviledged to ahve her." As Caleeka spoke Angeeal took in all of the information given. He was aware of the differences in sizes among the colors, just like Firelizards and Dragons, Golds being the largest and Greens the smallest with Blues, Browns, and Bronze inbetween. He was also aware of the temperments of the Whers and knew they were nothing like the Weyrs at Arolos, though they were different in the aspect that one was able to Impress a Dragon AND a Wher.
Angeeal turned to the new voice and all thoughts left his mind. Melia looked up in surprise, her Own had never been without thought before and she chirped up at his worriedly as Crisis butt his head against his cheek. However, Angeeal felt none of this as his eyes took in the form accompanying Xesn. "My...oh my..." he whispered, he wanted to stand but knew his legs wouldn't hold him. "She's...she's simply etheral..." Even the Gold of his father's friend was not as beautiful as this one, even a Queen Dragon could not hold a candle to her.

Keeva remained quietly listening to all being said. When Xesn and her wher came, she heard them before they spoke, recognizing the distinctive sound of two differnt paces and one with four feet. She turned toward the gold pair and smiled at the sight. She was a beautiful one. Schadoe had told her of the whers of Angel's Cove and the more she thought of it, the more she wanted a constant companion, both day and night. She needed that kind of safe feeling.
Caleeka smiled at Angeeal's hopes. "Well, you're not excluded from a gold just because your male like with the dragons. It has been documented that golds have bonded to men, so anything's possible with whers." She turned to Xesn's arrival after a brief note from Calee of the golden wher's approach. "You're not late at all," she assured Xesn. "We were waiting for one or two more, but since you're here, we'll go ahead and begin." She turned back to the Candidates. "Everyone, this is Xesn with her wher Xesna. Xesna's temperament is much like Calee's. She's one of our calmer whers except when she has a clutch. The purpose of this evening is for you all to get a better understanding of the possible temperaments of a wher should he or she choose you. We take a little more care with wher Candidates over dragon because whers don't grow out of their protectiveness of their bonds."

Randy was glad to hear that she wasn't late. That was the last thing that she had wanted to do. She found everything about whers interesting. She grinned when Calee said they would get to meet different whers and their handlers. Maybe she'd get to see Revee and Veela again. The girl's eyes widened when the gold wher walked in. She had never imagined a gold to look so lovely. "She's beautiful," the girl whispered.

Xesna knew she was being talked about. She arched her neck and sat next to her handler. She opened her small wings for a moment before closing them on her back again.
Xesn grinned at her gold wher's antics. Xesna always loved attention. She winked at Angeeal. She had herd him comment about her gold. Though she almost hadn't heard him. Would you like them to touch you, Xesna?
Xesna would like it. The gold wher replied. Her eyes whirling slowly in contentment.
"Xesna has agreed to be touched if anyone would like to. She's not normally so... acommodating, but we can take advantage of that while she's being like this." Xesna added once Caleeka was finished speaking. "She's normally aloof and alert. In that case she would never let anyone but me touch her. She is very protect of her clutches. Does anyone have any questions?"
OOC- I hope this is ok... Let me know if it's not ok and I'll change it.

Angeeal watched the gold's movement, noting her structure and sighing. She was in superb condition, large expressive eyes, lean elegant features, powerful muscles underneath flawless golden hide. His eyes snapped up to meet Xesn's and was truly surprised at her words. "R...Really? We may...?" he asked softly, he placed his feet on the ground and only when he felt he could walk did he stand and walk over to Xesn's side, his eyed never leaving the Gold. "Um...may I ask where she would prefer, I don't want to be rude..." He did have questions, but this was a chance he would not pass up...a chance to caress a creature such as she was...well, once in a lifetime.

"You can start by scratching her eyeridges. She just loves that." Xesn replied.
Xesna looked at the boy, curious. She reached up with her graceful neck. She seemed to be presenting the boy with one of her eyeridges, the right one to be exact.

Angeeal nodded at Xesn's words and swallowed nervously as Xesna leant forward. Melia scrambled up onto Angeeal's shoulder while Crisis leant backwards, he'd never been this close to one of these great creatures before. Angeeal smiled to Xesna. "Thank you for allowing me to touch you," he said softly before raising a hand and gently caress her eyerudge, following the same movements he did with Crisis and Melia gently using his nails to rake over her hide and the pads of his fingers smoothing over the surface.

Randy was surprised when Xesn said that Xesna would allow them to touch her. She knew Revee had said that all whers were different and most were very protective of their handlers. And Xesn's words only confirmed that more. The girl studied Xesna and let Angeeal go first. She wanted to touch the gold, but didn't mind waiting her turn. She tried to think of a good question to ask. "Why do you think she's being accomadating for you today?" she asked cursiously. "I am very glad she is, I was just cursious if we could expect the whers to have mood swings from time to time."

Xesn smiled at Randy's question. "That is a very good question. Xesna has been known to change moods rather quickly as a hatchling. Though as she matured, she changed moods less often. But she stll changes her moods. Though right now, she's being so accomodating because she knows she's being talked about. She is very intelligent, for a wher, though. Don't ever let that slip your mind when dealing with a gold or bronze wher, though. I've seen her be motherly to a human baby and terror on legs to a grown human trespassing. She knows the difference between the two."

Caleeka smiled and nodded to Xesn to go ahead and take over for the moment. No one knew a wher better than their handlers. She was a bit surprised that the gold was allowing others to touch her, but then whers did odd things when they clearly had the attention of the vicinity. Calee sat up to watch the goings on with the lesson. That and another wher was present. Even though they were sisters of the same clutch, she still felt the need to watch. ~Calee's not touching Xesna.~ she told Caleeka who just smiled and laid a hand on the green hide next to her. "Of course not, love. Why would I want to when you're mine and I'm yours?" the Assistant CandidateMaster returned, finding an itchy spot and gently rubbing at the hide. ~Good.~
Keeva smiled at the chance to touch the golden wher, and stood up to comply, but as soon as Angeeal stepped up to the wher, she stepped back and took her seat again. She would wait.

Angeeal smiled softly at the lovely creature, but he did not stay long. After about two minutes he forced his hand away from her eyeridge. "Others desire to have the privilege of touching you, but that you very much for allowing us the priviledge," he toled the Goldn before turning to Xesn. "Thank you for this oppurtunity," he said with a light bow before returning to his stool, his little flits perching comfortably on his shoulders.

Randy nodded and stored that information away for later. She would write it all down once she got back to her room. She was determined to learn as much about whers as she could. "Oh, I didn't realize that," she said. "I'll never question their intelligence." The girl noticed Keeva had started to get up, but sat down when Angeeal got there. Randy backed away and let the shy girl take her turn at seeing Xesna. She didn't mind waiting. She had already gotten to help bathe Veela after all.

Keeva listened to Angeeal's polite words and watched quietly, awaiting her chance to touch that beautiful creature. After glancing at Randy, she realized that the other girl was waiting for her to go ahead and so she stood and stepped lightly over to the wher, giving her handler a hesitant glance, avoiding eye contact. Then she gave Xesna a short, but polite nod of the head before reaching out to lightly touch the wher's hide.

Dani entered into the lesson shyly, knowing she was late. She inclined her head respectfully at the handlers already present and went to stand with her fellow candidates. "Sorry I'm late, ma'am. My chores ran a bit late and I had some trouble with something earlier."

Caleeka acknowledged the late arrival and gave Dani a smile instead of a frown. "I didn't want to keep Xesn and Xesna waiting, so we began. Take a seat and wait your turn to touch Xesna," she replied.
Keeva had touched Xesna's golden hide lightly with fingers trained to care for even the finest of threads. After only a few moments, she stepped back. "Thank you," she said softly to the wher and giving her handler a brief nod of her head in respect. The pale young woman then quietly returned to her place to give the others a chance.

Randy smiled as she watched Keeva. She decided she'd try talking with the girl later on. They were both hoping to Impress a wher after all. She glanced over at Dani and gave her friend a smile before stepping up to Xensa after Keeva had sat down. "You are a real beauty," she crooned to the gold as she gently pet the wher's eye ridges.

Angeeal had had his eyes glued on the two whers for the enitre time he'd returned to his stool, but now turned towards the two handlers and asked. "Is there any way of knowing when the current clutch will hatch? Is it like when dragons hatch and the surrounding dracons will begin to hum and gather around the eggs?"
|
|
|
Post by Mik on Nov 17, 2008 12:31:12 GMT -5
Caleeka smiled at Angeeal's question. "They do hum, but to a much quieter degree. Only nearby whers usually know, but then it doesn't take long for the rest of us to know considering whers can hear others at a distance. Firelizards will relay a nearing Hatching rather quickly. They like spreading cheer," she answered, knowing that her wher was a quiet one in announcing her eggs' hatchings, but every wher was different. Some were extremely vocal, others kept it low keyed. "We'll be keeping you all closer to the clutch once the hatching is within the awaited time of hardening. Don't worry, no one's going to miss their chance at Bonding."

OOC: No you're right, the entire weyr will know about it. Whers, especially golden ones of the Crique variety, love to let everyone and anyone know that they're littles are coming into the world. And you're right, firelizards will announce it too. And if the Candidate Master or ACM is a dragonrider, his or her dragon would announce it as well.
Dani looked around at all the people as she waited for her turn. She knew a few of them and smiled at her friends in the crowd. She knew she'd get to know all of these people if the golden wher let them all have one of her eggs. Then they'd all be training to be wherhandlers together too. It was an exciting time.

Randy moved away from Xensa to allow Dani her turn. "Thank you both," she said kindly with a bow to both Xesna and Xsen. The girl returned to her seat.
She perked up a little. They would be moving again? Closer to the whers? Randy couldn't wait. It would be so exciting. The more she learned about the whers the more she knew she had made the right choice.

Xesn smiled at Randy. "Your welcome." She looked back at her golden wher. Xesna looked to be thoroughly enjoying the Candidates touching her. "Xesna does hum for her clutch when she has one about to hatch. I was a bit surprised though when she had only clutched three eggs her first time. But, that may be all a wher may clutch. Xesna had been caught by a brown on her first 'flight'. Her other clutches were larger though. She'd been caught by bronzes those times. It depends on the male wher that catches a female that determines the colors in the eggs and how long the run/'flight' is that will determine the number of eggs. So, Xesna's first clutch was small because her 'flight' wasn't long and she'd been caught by a brown. If I remember correctly, its the same for the Dragons. Any questions?" She looked at the faces of the young faces around her.

Angeeal nodded at the words of the Gold Wherhandler before raising his hand slightly. "Um...well, when it comes to the Hatching, I ahve heard it is a little different from Dragon Hatching, such as Blooding. What should we expect during the Hatching?" he asked as his little 'monster's curled up to sleep, Melia in his lap and Crisis cuddle up against the side of his neck, hair of course tangled up around his little body.

"Good question, Angeeal. First off, remember this, everyone, that not every Hatching will be the same. When Xesna hatched, it happened rapidly. And others will be slow." Xesn replied. "For this Hatching, do not approach any of the hatchlings. The hatchling will come to you if you are it's bonded. And yes, to bond with your wher, the wher needs to drink some of your blood. The Golds and bronzes take a little more blood for a good bond than a brown, blue, or green. Though some may not even drink your blood to bond. Also be prepared for anything."
