Month 4:
Shii waited patiently in her office for the three people she'd summoned
to arrive. The Weyrwoman had a small basket next to her with three
firelizard eggs inside. Shii had found them while out on a flight with
Shuteth not long before the hatching and had gotten them. The eggs were
both to thank the people for their help with the weyr and also a reward
for the weyr-wide contest that had started for Shuteth's clutch. She
had been suprised when she'd found out about the contest but it did
give her a way to choose who recieved the flitt eggs she'd found. Now
all she had to do was wait.
Shii
---
L'bell walked briskly towards the Weyrwoman's office, chewing his lip
as he went. He felt he'd barely arrived, could he already have done
something to displease the Weyrwoman? He couldn't imagine why she'd
have summoned him.
When he arrived at her office, L'bell took a deep breath to compose
himself and entered.
"You needed to see me?" Though he saw the basket of eggs on the table,
his attention was on the Weyrwoman.
L'bell
----
Laliy followed a little behind L'bell. She wasn't quite sure why Shii would want to see her. She had just Impressed Hebertinth after all. She couldn't have messed her lessons up already. At least she hoped not.
The new weyrling stood quietly behind L'bell. She didn't want to interrupt them.
Laliy
----
It was daylight and Caleke was a bit tired yet, but thankfully he was able to leave his little wher behind in the cavern, fast asleep, or so he hoped for as long as Shii needed to speak with him. Calbolt never did like leaving his side after his bout with Firehead not so very long ago. The wherhandler was decent, except for his tired eyes from being awake when he was used to sleeping, but that was okay. He did things like this on occasion whenever he was needed. Seeing the Weyrwoman's door open, he took that as her expecting him and when he quietly stepped inside, he was a bit confused with a full rider and a weyrling also present. Looking to Shii, his face held the question he didn't yet voice.
Caleke
Shii looked up as the three she'd summoned entered. She looked each over
carefully then smiled warmly at them in greeting and rose to shake hands
with each of them. "Good day, all of you. Sorry if this has inconveinced
any of you. As you all know, I've summoned the three of you here, what
you don't know is the reason." She gestured at the seats. "Please take a
seat if you'd like, this won't take long. I've got something for the
three of you." She went over to the basket on her desk and opened it to
show the three the flitt eggs inside. "I have here, three firelizard
eggs in need of good homes. I've been debating for a while as to how to
choose then I heard about a little contest that got started around the
weyr. As it turns out, you're names were put in for the pool and the
three of you won." She smiled brightly. "This means, each of you make
pick one egg from this basket and the firelizard that hatches is yours.
A warning though, these aren't regular flitt eggs. Shuteth said that
they have either a gold or bronze flitter inside them. Congradulations
all of you. Now, take an egg if you please." She held the basket out
steadily to the three and waited.
Shii
***
Laliy quietly took one of the offered seats. She tried to figure out why they had been summoned but couldn't. Her face flushed a little when Shii mentioned about the contest. The weyrling hoped it hadn't gotten them in trouble. Her eyes widened in surprise at Shii's words. "Honest? We all can pick an egg?" She had a hard time believing it. Then wondered what Hebertinth would think of a flit.
Laliy
--**--
Caleke smiled at Shii's words. He'd often fancied firelizards for their usefullness, but had never really sought one out. Here, it was the firelizard that was seeking him out. And a bronze or gold at that? He wouldn't care. Calbolt would like the new one to help care for. He always liked helping with Neek whenever he could. Although, ever the polite one, he gestured to the other two present. "You two pick first. I'm not picky," he said pleasantly with a smile. He would take whichever one was left.
Caleke
---
Though surprised and even more confused by the presence of the new
weyrling and the wher handler, L'bell managed a quick nod to each of
them. Then the Weyrwoman stood greeted them and all the muscles L'bell
had unconsciously tightened began to relax. He really was far too
concerned about this. Feeling it would be impolite to refuse, he took
a seat when it was offered and listened intently.
As she explained the reason for calling them to her office, his
eyebrows slowly rose. A flit? A bronze or gold flit? He'd only
entered that contest for the fun of guessing. Like Caleke, he had
never sought out a firelizard-- and in fact, had specifically avoided
bringing up the subject of one with Fallanth until this point.
Well, Fallanth would become accustomed in time to the idea. And it
would certainly be useful to have a firelizard to convey messages.
"Thank you very much," he bowed his head to the young Weyrwoman. "I
think the young lady ought to have first choice." He nodded again to
the weyrling, smiling.
L'bell
****
Laliy still couldn't believe what Shii had told them. She wondered what Hebertinth would think of having a flit. The girl shrugged a tad. She'd deal with that one later.
She smiled at the other two. "Are you both sure? I don't mind waiting," she answered. She was the youngest after all and didn't want to interfer with the others getting their eggs.
Laliy
--**--
"Go on, miss. Best you pick your own which is what will make him or her so special when your egg hatches," Caleke said with another smile. L'bell seemed the gentlemen and he was always one that stayed in the 'shadows', never one to care much for the 'spotlight'.
Caleke
***
Laliy smiled at the men before tentatively picking an egg. She really didn't care what color it would hatch. She just felt privileged to even have a chance at a flit. "Thank you both," she said, cradling her egg.
Laliy
---
"You're quite welcome." L'bell followed suit, picking one of the two
remaining eggs without spending too long examining them. The one he
scooped up was a slightly more pleasing shade to his eyes. He held it
carefully in both hands, then looked to the wherhandler to take the
remaining egg. How courteous of the young man to take last pick. Then
again, all three seemed pleased just to be so honored by the
Weyrwoman, so what did it matter which egg they chose?
L'bell
--**--
Caleke smiled as the other two chose an egg from Shii's basket. Once they'd made their choices, he stepped forward to take the last one, not wanting to keep the Weyrwoman waiting any longer than need be. Gently taking the egg, he smiled at its warmth, briefly taken aback to when he'd helped his little Calbolt hatch so many turns ago, it seemed. He'd saved the tiny blue from an egg he couldn't break and he was constantly helping Caleke ever since. "Thank you, ma'am," the Handler said with a smile, tucking the egg gently against his stomach to keep it warm until he could borrow some sand from his brother or sister.
Caleke
Shii smiled as each of the three picked an egg before putting the basket
they'd been in on the middle of the table and pulling out a bucket full
of meat. "Don't worry about finding sand to put them in. Shuteth just
told me the eggs are going to hatch in a moment. So if each of you could
put your egg in the bucket so it rest in front of you, you can grab a
scrap of meat to feed your new flitt." Just as she'd finished talking
the three eggs began to shake and crack. She grinned when the three
quickly put their respective egg back into the basket so they could get
food for their new companions.
The first egg to hatch was the one chosen by Caleke. It cracked down the
middle revealing a large bronze firelizard. The bronze squaked hungrily
and then stumbled out of his shell and into Caleke.
Shii grinned. "Now feed him."
The next to hatch was Laliy's egg. Another bronze hatched from this egg.
The little boy was smaller than the first bronze to hatch but didn't
seem to mind. He chirped quietly as he looked around the room before
stumbling over to Laliy and the food she offered.
The Weyrwoman nodded. "Alright, one to go."
The final egg shook and shook, finally rolling out of it's basket and
onto the table in front of L'bell. After a long moment of struggling,
the egg broke apart and a shining, shimmering little gold fell out. The
gold shook herself a bit and seemed to study L'bell before moving over
to the bluerider and nuzzling his hand for food. The little girl was
gentle about her wanting of food and crooned happily at the man in front
of her.
Shii shook her head. "And that's the last of them. Feed them quickly,
and good luck with them. Congradulations to all of you for winning the
contest." The Weyrwoman then sat back down in her seat to watch the
aftermath of the hatching. She loved to see people's reactions whenever
they bonded to a firelizard. Every time she'd seen it happen, people
reacted differently.
Shii
***
Laliy had been surprised when Shii said that the eggs would be hatching any moment. She nearly jumped when her egg started to crack. The girl watched quietly, wondering what color it would be.
The weyrlings eyes widened when a little bronze stumbled out. She quickly got some meat and held it out for him. Before long, the little bronze was sleeping peacefully in Laliy's arms. The girl was all smiles. She couldn't believe she had Impressed a firelizard. Now she'd have to introduce him to Hebertinth. Hopefully the green wouldn't mind him. The bronze shivered a little as he curled closer to Laliy's chest. The girl chuckled.
Laliy
---
The eggs were already going to hatch? He could hardly believe his
luck. But then the first egg cracked, revealing the large bronze. Then
the smaller bronze. L'bell was enjoying watching the reactions of his
two fellows when the final egg rolled towards him. A gold! Her
nuzzling reminded him to breathe; his breath had caught at the sight
of her. He knelt some to be closer to her and gave her the piece of
meat, while gently stroking her little head with the other hand.
"What a sweet little thing..."
The blue rider scooped her up in his arms, still stroking her, and
looked to see how the others were fairing. The little bronze was
already asleep.
"That's a handsome fellow you have there." A shrill cry answered that
remark, and L'bell looked down to find his little queen glaring up at
him. Was she still hungry? He tried to offer her a little more meat,
but she refused. Then he realized what his offense must have been.
"You're beautiful yourself, of course." This must have appeased her,
as she returned to her placid crooning.
L'bell
***
Laliy smiled at L'bell. "Thank you," she said as she stroked her bronze's soft back. The little bronze moved slightly, but didn't wake. Laliy knew she was going to have to think of a good name for him.
She turned back to L'bell and hid a chuckle at the little queen's indignation. "She is very beautiful," she commented.
Laliy
--**--
Caleke smiled when the big bronze stumbled from his shell with a snort at the encasing. Turning to see where he was going, he ran right into the wherhandler' s hands that were blocking him from falling off the table in his headlong stumble. With an agitated hiss, he glared at the offending blockade, then watched as one hand moved to a bucket and came back with something good. A quick snatch and several chomps on the piece of meat and he was looking at Caleke with a little less aggression and begging for more. Caleke smiled. Firelizard Impressions were done like whers were. Getting a bit of a hunger pang, the thin handler offered another piece of meat to his hungry creature who took it much gentler and chewed more slowly. He begged for another piece and only ate a few bites before deciding that was it. Then it was those sticky, gooey things that stuck out of his sides and he fluttered them, spraying egg goo everywhere until he was satisfied, then he
wandered over to Caleke and curled up in his arms. Caleke chuckled at the bronze's attitude, then looked at the others after the egg goo shower. "I'm sorry about that, everyone," he apologized.
Caleke
Shii grinned at the three and their new flitters. "Well, I'm glad
they've all gotten good homes. I can't wait to see what you name them.
Just remember, with firelizards, the better you care for them, the more
they want to do in return. Treat them well, and their yours for life.
Treat them badly, and they're likely to go wild. That said, thank you
all for your time today. You may go when you're ready."
Shii
--**--
Caleke smiled at the sticky firelizard in his arms and nodded a thanks to the Weyrwoman. "Thank you, ma'am." With that dismissal, he carefully stood, hoping to not wake his new pet in the process, then quietly left to go back to Calbolt and probably fall back asleep for a short while until either his wher or his new firelizard awoke...
Caleke

Laliy carefully stood up. Her little bronze didn't even move. "Thank you, Weyrwoman," she said happily. "I better get back to Hebertinth before she wakes up and wonders where I am." The girl walked out of the office, cuddling her new friend.
Laliy
