Month 2:
It was pushing dusk now and Sanrev was awake, as was Sanrek and even Neek. So, the quiet trio began their usual routine that started every evening and went on until the early morning hours. The big brown with his odd goggles moseyed along next to his chosen, watching what all was going on around them. The set of goggles that shielded his sensitive eyes were about to be tossed away soon. He never could keep a pair good. ~Sanrek see someone. Who is that Sanrek sees?~ the wher asked his handler, stopping and lifting his head to look in the direction of his interest. He just liked to know the Weyr's residents and with new ones coming in every day, he was seeing at least one new face every time they were out.
Neek sat up on the brown's back, standing out against the dark hide easily, curious of the wher's and his pet's interest.
Sanrev looked at the indicated person and smiled a greeting with a wave of his hand.

Caolin had slipped out of the barracks to enjoy the evening air. He knew the candidates' curfew would be up soon, but he just couldn't help himself. He loved being outside. Especially since he was at a new Weyr. It gave him more things to study and learn. And that was a big plus in his book.
The candidate started when he saw Sanrev and Sanrek. He had never actually seen a wher before. Sure, he'd read about them, but that was about it. "Ah, hi," he said, waving back.
Caolin
The wherhandler smiled at the lad. "Evenin', kid," he said in his quiet voice, but loud enough to be heard easily. "Sanrek was curious of you. He hasn't seen you before. Sorry if he startled you. He's got that effect," the tall man said in explanation. Sanrek did have an awkward appearance for a wher and it seemed often enough when he'd confuse folk. The brown sat down and studied the lad, the bright blue fielizard on his back flitting a moment until his perch had settled again. ~Sanrek not know name.~ he told his chosen. Sanrev carried out the request, not knowing the Candidate's name himself. "He'd like to know your name," he said.
Sanrev<>Sanrek
Caolin slowly started to relax and returned Sanrev's smile. The boy nodded a little. He was actually quite intrigued by Sanrek. "It's okay," he answered, his eyes showing his curiosity. He loved learning new things and he didn't know much about whers. "I just didn't realize Angel's Cove had whers. I've never actually seen one in person. I've read about them though." The boy's face colored. In his excitement he hadn't thought that they probably didn't know him. "Sorry, sir. I'm Caolin. I just arrived about a sevenday ago," he said quietly.
Caolin
Sanrev chuckled softly. ~Caolin nice name.~ Sanrek commented. "That's okay and he likes your name, lad. I'm Sanrev. That's Neek on top of Sanrek there," he said, pointing in introduction, gaining an inquisitive chirp from the bright blue. "Sanrek's a Crique Wher. They're specific to this area only," he explained a bit although he would gladly teach more about his big friend.
Sanrev<>Sanrek
The candidate stared in surprise. "Really, sir? He likes my name?" He bowed to Sanrek. "Well, thank you kindly, Sanrek." Caolin turned back to Sanrev after smiling at Neek. "A Crique Wher? I didn't realize there was different kinds." This was getting interesting. He hadn't really expected to run into anyone let alone someone who could teach him about Whers.
Caolin
Sanrev smiled. A curious one. They were okay. "Yes, he does. And he means all that he says, too." Sanrek seemed to smile. ~Caolin welcome.~ His handler smiled again. "He says welcome," he said in translation to the wher's speech pattern. "And Criques were an experiment. We wanted to make whers a little less aggressive and we managed. Not to mention Criques are bigger than the other whers," he added in explanation.
Sanrev<>Sanrek
A smile lit up Caolin's face. He had never expected to see a wher up close, let alone have one compliment his name. The boy listened to Sanrev's every word. "Other whers are agressive?" he asked, trying to recall the little knowledge that he had on whers. He looked at Sanrek. "Not all are as big as Sanrek? I've never actually seen a wher until Sanrek, sir," he said. "So I don't know much about them."
Caolin
Sanrev smiled as his wher's attention turned to scanning the soon to be dark Weyr as was his and his chosen's duty. "Nope. Golds and bronzes are even bigger. And the wild whers, the ones you've probably heard of, they're smaller and quite mean when it comes to letting other people near their handlers. Crique whers like Sanrek allow it a bit more." He smiled as he glanced at his brown. They should be getting back to their patrol soon, but he was certain Candidates had some sort of curfew to be back in the barracks by, so he wasn't too concerned to hurry. Besides, he had all night to make his usual few laps about the Weyr's boundaries and check in on a few places. "If you really wanna learn all about them, my sister would be the best one to seek out. She likes to teach," he informed Caolin.
sanrev<>sanrek
Caolin watched Sanrek as the wher looked around. He was just so intrigued by him. Sometimes it was hard to believe that they were cousins to the dragons, but Caolin actually sort of liked the whers. "Shards! They must be big then." The candidate cringed a little. "Then I'll make sure to stay away from the whers unless I know the handlers and they say I can approach." He glanced up at the sky with a grimace. He wasn't looking forward to going back to the Barracks. He wanted to stay and talk. Caolin looked back at Sanrev. "Really? Your sister likes to teach?" He didn't know who Sanrev's sister was, but he was willing to talk to anyone that would help him learn new things.
Caolin
Sanrev shrugged. To him dragons were big. "Yeah, her name's Caleeka and she's got a green wher. I'll direct her to you some time soon." ~Sanrek and Sanrek's late for trader enter,~ the big brown noted. Sanrev looked at his wher with a smile. "I'm afraid we must be going. Sanrek doesn't like getting too much off the usual this early in the night. And you've probably got a curfew, huh?" Sometimes he wondered if his wher could tell time...
Sanrev<>Sanrek
"Oh, I would appreciate that, sir," Caolin said excitedly. Learning new things was great fun in his opinion. He smiled at the wher, but his eyes held sadness. "I understand," he said, staying cheery. "I didn't mean to keep you so long." The boy nodded slowly. "Yes, sir. We do."
Caolin
Sanrev chuckled with a shake of his head. "Don't worry about it. Sanrek just has a routine on the first and last trip around the Weyr." With a smile, he held his hand out to the boy, Sanrek watching closely. "It was very nice meeting you, Caolin," the wherhandler said.
Sanrev<>Sanrek
Caolin glanced at the wher. "I see," he said simply. "Well, I don't want to keep him away from that." The boy shook Sanrev's hand. He had so many questions he wanted to ask about whers, but knew he'd have to wait. Maybe he'd meet Sanrev's sister soon. "You also, sir," he said with a bow. "And you as well, Sanrek. Thank you taking the time to talk to me."
Caolin
Sanrev nodded with a smile. "You're welcome. Run along now so you don't get into trouble." Sanrek relaxed once the two parted, then was content to watch the boy a bit longer before reminding his chosen and himself that they were late for getting to the footpath entrance. "Take care, Caolin," the wherhandler called as he turned to head off, his big brown moseying along beside him in the same manner that they had been before meeting the Candidate.
Sanrev<>Sanrek
The boy nodded reluctantly. He didn't want to leave, but he didn't want in trouble either. Caolin turned around and raced back toward the Barracks before anyone caught him out. "Bye!" the boy called over his shoulder, before disappearing inside.
Caolin
Sanrev chuckled at the lad's obvious excitement. "He's a nice on, eh Sanrek?" he said to his wher as they walked onward. ~Yes. Nice. Not hurt Sanrek's. Caolin nice.~ the brown answered as Neek settled onto his back again.
